What I've Been Watching | Jan - Mar 2020

I did the same post this time last year so I guess it's now tradition but knowing that I will be on maternity leave come May I decided that I finally need to watch the things I've added to my watch list over the years and so I made a start. Here are the things I've watched over the last 3 months and what I thought.

Don't Fuck With Cats 10/10

I had this recommended to me SO many times from loads of different people that I decided one boring day off of work that I might as well start it. And I finished it the same day. It's only three hours long but it's so gripping from start to finish that I couldn't help watching one episode after the other. When people explained the basic story to me saying it was about a man who killed cats and a man and filmed it I have to say I was dubious to watch it mostly because I wasn't sure I could watch the cats or man die on screen but luckily they don't show anything too graphic. I was honestly astounded by the people who started investigating into who might be behind the videos. They made literally anything a clue; it was seriously impressive. I won't give too much away but it's incredible.

You 7.5/10

When I started watching this back in January the second season had only been released a few weeks previously and so the hype around it was high again. I was bored one day off from work and so gave it a go and I'm glad I've seen it but I wouldn't rush to re-watch it. The first season I found very gripping and enjoyed throughly but I found the second to be a bit slower and more of the same so I ended up paying less attention to it. I was always put off from watching it because I thought it was going to be full of gore and scares but actually most of the time you don't even see the murders directly happen, they kind of happen just out of or completely out of shot which is fine at first but eventually you end up wondering why bother? If you can show the bloody body then why hide how it happened? I'll probably watch season 3 but I'm sure I could already predict what will happen as I felt both seasons were very similar and I can't see them changing that for the new season but we shall see!

How To Get Away With Murder (S1-5) 8.5/10

This is another programme that has been on my list for ages and I've just never felt drawn to starting. I wasn't too sure what to expect from the trailer as I knew it followed law students and their professor but I couldn't tell if they would be murderous people who happened to stumbled upon each other, looking at murder cases in detail or if they would eventually commit murder and follow their story from there. I thought the way they introduced the element of murder was very clever, especially with the jump forward time lapse that kept happening and eventually catching up with current events. Once the murder of season one came to a close and we were given all the information about it I was unsure how they would continue the story with the same characters in season 2 but the cliffhanger ending was perfect as it leaves you wanting more but also feeling satisfied that one of the murders was solved. As each season developed the characters became more and more complex and you learn why each of them are where they are and their back stories and you end up loving them all for different reasons but also thinking that they are the most dysfunctional group of people to ever become friends. I really enjoyed this programme and would definitely recommend, especially if you enjoy injections of the law element without too much focus on it such as in series like Suits.

Pretty Little Liars (S1-5) 6.5/10

Jack had never watched this and so one evening I made him watch the first episode and he was hooked from there. He was adamant he could work out who A was and it was hilarious re-watching it knowing who it was and seeing him guess everyone except the right person. I forgot how ridiculous it gets in the last couple of seasons but I was able to appreciate it with 16 year old me still very much alive inside of me. I'm glad I re-watched it but I think two full runs of this show is my limit!

Cheer 7/10

Again, everyone was talking about this and I got curious one evening. I honestly didn't expect to enjoy it at all but I was surprised that I found myself wanting to know more about the cheerleading society and rooting for them. I would say however that I didn't become as invested in it as some other people I know and now I've seen it I won't be re-watching it. It's definitely worth watching though because I have a new appreciation for cheerleading; the work that goes into it and just how hard it is both physically and mentally.

Mindhunter 6/10

My dad was the one who turned me on to this programme and I have to say it intrigued me. It looks at the start of the FBI studying and determining characteristics of a serial killer and whether or not they could use any findings to determine whether someone would become a serial killer before they actually become one. It's set in the 70/80's in America (mostly Quantico, Virginia) and follows two FBI agents Ford & Tench as well as psychologist Wendy Carr. Ford comes up with an idea to interview killers of multiple people (they don't have the phrase serial killer at this time) in the hopes of determining how they think, eventually being able to apply this to ongoing cases. They start with Ed Kemper who for those who don't know murdered 10 people between 1964 and 1973 and the story develops from there. It's interesting to watch and think about how new this must have all been at the time; it was a revolutionary way of thinking and one that still heavily applies in criminal psychology today. I did find the series could drag at certain points and it's not as fast paced or intense as maybe it could have been. However, I think that's also part of it's charm because it's true to how it would have been at the time instead of sensationalising it. Definitely one for the watch list.

Hopefully there is something in here you've either been thinking of watching or are now thinking of watching! I still have loads of programmes on my watch list so expect a lot more of these posts in the next few months! Do you have any recommendations?
